Heterosexual couple lose civil partnership challenge

  • Posted

A heterosexual couple who want to enter into a civil partnership have lost a legal challenge at London's High Court. Rebecca Steinfeld and Charles Keidan were told in 2014 that they could not enter into a civil partnership because they were a man and a woman. They brought a legal challenge, saying the law discriminated against them, but Mrs Justice Andrews dismissed their claim for judicial review. The couple said they wanted to commit to each other in a civil partnership as it focuses on equality and did not carry the patriarchal history and associations of marriage. Mrs Justice Andrews has given permission for them to appeal.Lauren Evans, family lawyer at Kingsley Napley, said: "Everyone, be they straight, gay or bisexual, should have the same freedom to choose how to define their relationship."
