Will signings amid pandemic
We have seen an increase in people wanting to write a Will amid the Covid-19 pandemic. This has highlighted the number of adults who do not have an up to date Will and are recognising the importance of having one. Any adult with financial assets such as property, savings, investments etc. and children under 18 should have a Will.
As we are all practising social distancing and our offices are closed for face to face appointments we understand it may be difficult to sign your Will.
The Law Society has called upon the Ministry of Justice to relax Will writing laws and potentially use video conferencing however the Ministry has responded saying “This is a delicate area of law and we absolutely must continue to protect the elderly and vulnerable against potential fraud.”
Currently, you must have your Will witnessed by two independent adults who are physically present. To help assist, we are able to visit your home and witness you signing your Will whilst observing distancing restrictions as far as possible. This may mean signing your Will through your window or on your door step. If you are arranging the signing of your Will yourself, you can ask two neighbours to be your witnesses or work colleagues if you are still working.
We are providing free Wills for key workers in conjunction with Cancer Research UK. If you are a key worker or know anybody who is, please contact us to arrange an appointment or find out more. Alternatively, please click here to read about the campaign. 01246471900/info@buchananco.co.uk.
