HS2

Part of the government’s proposed route for the High Speed Two (HS2) rail link from Birmingham to Leeds passes through Chesterfield borough.

A maintenance depot is also proposed at the site of the former Staveley Works site as part of the project.

The current preferred route would pass east of Duckmanton and Staveley. However, a proposed alternative route, published in July 2016, presents an alternative option that would see a new line constructed each of the borough, and high speed trains pass through Chesterfield on the existing Midland Mainline on their way to Sheffield, with the potential for an additional stop in Chesterfield.

The revised plans for the HS2 Rail link, which could mean two high speed trains an hour stopping in Chesterfield have been welcomed by town leaders.

HS2 Ltd, the company responsible for developing, delivering and promoting the HS2 rail network in the UK, will be running information events in the North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire area for people interested in the proposals.

More information and maps of the original and alternative routes, along with more details of the depot as Staveley, can be seen on the HS2 website:
